At around 6 p.m. on Tuesday, Hypnotic Donuts took to Instagram and Facebook to announce the immediate closure of its original and sole remaining location on Garland Road.

“After 12 years of serving the best donuts and chicken biscuits in Dallas,” the post read. “It is time to retire.”
The business first came about in 2010, when James St. Peter and his wife, Amy, began selling doughnuts out of the back of their van. The couple’s sweet treats became a local sensation thanks to immense word of mouth and the power of early social media, giving way for them to open their own storefront in 2012.

The first few years of Hypnotic were defined by an equal helping of hip and hype. The former, manifested with a hippie-esque interior, with big couches and a vinyl record player, encouraging patrons to hang out. The latter, fielding consistent long lines of eager Dallasites ready to taste the new flavors.

In 2014, Hypnotic opened a second location in Denton. Two years later, the flagship in Lakewood expanded to include Hypnotic Emporium, a 1920s-style ice cream parlor.

But things haven’t been so sweet since then. St. Peter sold the business in 2019, and the Denton location would close later that same year. Last April, the Hypnotic Emporium shut its doors, but the original doughnut shop remained open. Just over a year later, the once-dominant dessert empire will be gone for good.

According to The Dallas Morning News, the space on Garland Road is set to become a Juiceland.
