September 1 ushered in more than 800 laws from the 89th Texas Legislature; among them was the expansion of the Texas Compassionate Use Program (TCUP), the state’s medical marijuana program.

On the front lines of this marijuana-friendly wave is Texas Original. As the name implies, the licensed medical cannabis dispensary is Texas-born. Having first planted roots in Austin in 2017, the dispensary has since expanded to 17 locations across Texas, including Dallas, Hurst, and Plano. All of Texas Original’s products are grown, manufactured and tested here in the Lone Star State. The company’s mission is to serve fellow Texans by creating high-quality medicinal products that improve people’s lives.

“Working at Texas Original gives me the opportunity to help patients improve their quality of life,” says Crystal Daniels, dispensary manager at the Hurst and Plano locations. “Seeing how our medicine makes a difference for people from all walks of life reminds me of the meaningful impact we’re making.”

With the recent additions made to TCUP, Texas Original is working to help prospective medical marijuana patients learn about their eligibility status, get prescribed and get medicated.

Who Qualifies for Medical Marijuana?

At its inception in 2015, TCUP was greatly limited, allowing only prescriptions of low-THC cannabis for patients with intractable epilepsy, a condition that is characterized by a patient’s failure to respond to anti-seizure medication.

In the ensuing years, additions to the program’s eligibility further opened the door to medical marijuana access. However, in 2025, the program underwent its largest expansion, with ailments such as chronic pain and traumatic brain injuries now included.

Other qualifying conditions include autism, cancer, multiple sclerosis, post-traumatic stress disorder, Crohn’s disease or other inflammatory bowel disease, terminal illness and over 100 others.

Texas Original offers a comprehensive list of qualifications that could lead to a medical marijuana prescription.

How to Find Out If You’re Eligible

Find out if you qualify to receive a prescription by scheduling an appointment with a doctor registered with the Texas Compassionate Use Program. To find a doctor nearby who is registered to write low-THC-level cannabis prescriptions, search by city or county using the Compassionate Use Registry of Texas (CURT) database. Many doctors offer telemedicine appointments, too.

Texas Original now has 17 dispensary locations across the state.

Why Choose Texas Original?

Texas Original is a homegrown company that values the importance its service has for Texans, from plant to prescription.

While Texas is becoming increasingly more urban, according to U.S. census data, many undeveloped and rural areas may lack access to alternative health-care methods such as medical marijuana. To help alleviate the burden of traveling for prescription pickups, Texas Original works to make medical cannabis more accessible by offering delivery for patients who don’t live near pickup locations.

The company takes pride in cultivating the highest-quality medicine grown and manufactured in Texas. From seed to solution, every product is cultivated, tested and formulated to ensure that patients receive consistent, reliable care locally.

“The benefits of medical cannabis have been life-changing,” says Michael Black, a Texas Original patient from Hurst who uses medical cannabis to manage his PTSD symptoms. “I have reduced prescription medications and improved my quality of life since I received a prescription.”

As Texas Original continues to expand into new communities across the state, it plans to bring medicine closer to patients while also developing stronger, full-spectrum products.

Currently, Texas law prohibits smokable products. However, once the Health and Human Services Commission approves medical vaporization products, Texas Original will continue to lead the rollout of these sweeping changes to the state’s medical marijuana program.
