Homegrown Music & Art FestivalSaturday, May 26, at Main Street Garden ParkFor the third annual installment of Homegrown Music & Arts Festival, the margins for bands have expanded to include all Texas acts. So this year’s bill will feature Black Joe Lewis, Hayes Carll, Octopus Project and many more. Not a bad band in the bunch.
Father John Misty, Har Mar SuperstarFriday, May 25, at Sons of Hermann HallIn this week’s print edition, we spoke with Father John Misty’s Josh Tillman about his seemingly new persona. He no longer comes off as the introspective, solemn artist he did during his solo career in the early Aughts or with his stint as Fleet Foxes’ drummer. Now, he’s sort of a lovable, wise-cracking smart-ass, and it’s all over his new album, Fear Fun.
FloatSunday, May 27, at Lake LewisvilleSpune Productions brings us a day of floating on Lake Lewisville while listening to acts like Ray Wylie Hubbard, James McMurtry, Wayne Hancock and more. There will be sunburns.
David RamirezThursday, May 24, at Poor David’s PubIt’s
seems that Austin-by-way-of Dallas singer songwriter David Ramirez has
shed his penchant for Damien Rice songs, which is a good thing. Or at
least he hides it well. Check out this ever-improving artist tonight.
JojoFriday, May 25, at House of BluesTomorrow
is i93′s summer kickoff party, featuring Jojo, whose career peaked a
few years back. You can’t buy tickets to this show, you just have to
listen to 93.3-FM to win.
Turnpike TroubadoursFriday, May 25, at Granada TheaterOld
time country meets red dirt. That’s a pretty general yet fitting
description for Oklahoma’s Turnpike Troubadours, who will be joined on
the Granada stage by the Dirty River Boys and Thieving Birds.
David Garza, Dan DyerFriday, May 25, at The Kessler TheaterThe
Kessler Theater loves them some Dallas music history. David Garza is a
big part of that. Over a decade ago, he would frequent Deep Ellum clubs,
playing with the likes of Edie Brickell. Garza has since moved to
Austin, and rarely comes up to Dallas anymore to perform. When he
does, it’s at The Kessler.
Eternal (of Wu Tang)Friday, May 25, at Hailey’s ClubThere
are well-known members of the Wu-Tang Clan: Method Man, RZA and
GZA, Ghostface Killah. Unfortunately, Eternal is not one of them.
MeWithoutYouSaturday, May 26, at The Door
One
of the early champions of emo music in underground Christian circles, MeWithoutYou has grown up a bit over the last decade, and so
have their fans. I predict Saturday’s show at The Door will still be
packed.
Styx, Gin BlossomsSaturday, May 26, at Farmer’s Branch Historical ParkEasily
making this weekend’s weirdest bill, Styx and Gin Blossoms will
headline Liberty Fest, brought to you by the fine metropolitan city of
Farmer’s Branch. If you’re dead set on seeing the Gin Blossoms (aren’t
we all?) but can’t make this show, don’t fret. The band will be back at
Billy Bob’s Texas in July.
The DarknessSunday, May 27, at House of BluesI
remember when The Darkness played at the Gypsy Tea Room years ago.
There were more lights than I’ve ever seen in a club before. Not sure what fans can expect from Sunday’s
performance, but it will, no doubt, include the glam metal anthem,
“I Believe in a Thing Called Love.”
Plants & AnimalsSunday, May 27, at DadaCanadian
indie rock act Plants & Animals, are the perfect way for hipsters
to ring in Memorial Day, to which the band will say, “What’s that?”
Parking Lot Pool PartySunday, May 27, at Double WideA great way for the less inhibited hipster to get ready for Memorial Day. If you’re not quite ready to jump into the above ground pools
at Double Wide, just drink a few rum-spiked Yoo-Hoos and you’ll be fine.
Allen City Blues Festival
Sunday, May 27, at Allen Event Center
Allen’s first ever blues fest hits the decks with some big names: The Robert Cray Band, Jimmie Vaughan, Robert Randolph & the Family Band, Ian Moore Band and Tyler Bryant & the Shakedown.
Penguin Prison, Class Actress, Datahowler
Monday, May 28, at DadaWhat
better way to spend Memorial Day than at this dance party at Dada.
Penguin Prison is yet another dance-pop act that will probably be much
too big for this venue before long.
Badass JazzMonday, May 28, at The Amsterdam BarSeriously,
if you’ve never been to Badass Jazz, you really ought to check this
out. Shelley Carrol and a group of old-school jazz pros do this every
Monday night at what is pretty much the coolest bar in Dallas.
