Not sure if it’s possible to be reading this right now and still be unaware of the biggest show coming to town this weekend. Saturday in Deep Ellum, we will kick off the Dallas Observer Music Awards festivities with the most kickass showcase we’ve ever put on. Aside from over 40 of the area’s top bands playing in Deep Ellum clubs (click here for the complete lineup and set times), our outdoor main stage will feature The Cool Kids, Secret Machines, Lucero, and Jonathan Tyler and the Northern Lights. And to top it off, wristbands for the entire thing are only $10.
There are, however, other shows coming to town over the weekend. Here’s a few that we’ve already mentioned this past week:
On Friday, Darktown Strutters will bring their bizarre dance-pop to Dan’s Silverleaf. The polarizing theramin-rock act, Octopus Project, will be at the Granada Theater along with FUR and Florene. Nathaniel Rateliff and the Beaten Sea will be over at The Loft, and Weird Al Yankovic will be at Verizon Theatre.
On Saturday, if, for some reason, you’re not into the DOMA showcase we’ve got planned, then All Good Cafe has the Not The DOMA Showcases showcase all day. And if you just have a hankering to see The Nuge (Ted Nugent), he’ll be at Billy Bob’s Texas.
On Sunday, Ricki Derek will be doing it his way at The Cavern.

Peopleodian, Fate LionsFriday, July 16, at The CavernElectro chamber-pop act Peopleodian plays with chamber pop-rock band Fate Lions. Both bands offer songs with great hooks.
Smile Smile, El Cento, Household NamesFriday, July 16, at Double WideDOMA-nominated pop duo Smile Smile has been making some of the area’s best pop for years. Round out the bill with Shibolith member, Don Cento and you’ve got yourself a nice little show at the Double Wide.
Kenny RogersFriday, July 16, at Bass Performance HallThe author of the greatest poker advice ever given.
Baboon, Jenny Dick, Hard TimesSaturday, July 17, at Dallas Comedy HouseA recharged Dallas mainstay, Baboon plays this show in a pretty unlikely venue. For the most part, the members of Baboon have moved on to other projects (lead singer Andrew Huffstetler now fronts The Boom Boom Box), but this is sure to be a fun show.
Shakedown Alley, The DangitsSaturday, July 17, at Andy’s Bar & GrillThe Dangits’ impressive Motorhead-esque punk rock will almost certainly make for a good show at Andy’s. I predict a mosh pit.
Eleven Hundred Springs, Zane Williams, Shoot Low SheriffSaturday, July 17, at Granada TheaterDallas country act, Eleven Hundred Springs finds a balance between today’s pop country and the classic stuff that clearly inspires them. The Granada is the perfect venue for this show. There’s plenty of room for dancing, and plenty of beer to inspire it.
David GarzaSaturday, July 17, at The Kessler TheaterDavid Garza was a big deal around here about 10 or 15 years ago. He’s still making records and touring the country. His stop at The Kessler this weekend should be something of a homecoming.
Noel Paul StookeySaturday, July 17, at Poor David’s PubIt’s always a little disappointing to see a once-legendary act perform well after their prime, especially when you expect to see the same vigor and energy that you remember. Not saying that’s going to be the case with Noel Paul Stookey (Peter, Paul and Mary), but it’s worth checking out, especially since all proceeds for the concert go to benefit Hugworks.org.

Sunday, July 18, at Barley HouseTwo of Dallas’ best folk/rock/country artists play at the place they got their start. This same bill could’ve easily taken place 10 years ago when the Barley House was on Henderson Ave.
