It’s hard to say where St. Vincent is going to pop up next these days. Chances are, it’ll be somewhere that makes us jealous if it’s not Dallas. Last we heard from the artist otherwise known as Annie Clark, she was jumping onstage with Taylor Swift in Los Angeles to do some shredding. Now over the weekend she popped up in Marfa, helping out Jenny Lewis on stage at the Trans-Pecos Festival of Music and Love.

This time, she was playing drums. That’s right. Well, and some guitar too.

St. Vincent, who celebrated her birthday on Monday, joined Lewis the night before for her headlining slot at the Trans-Pecos Festival. She backed up Lewis for a couple of Lewis’ songs, including playing the drums on “Just One of the Guys” and guitar on a new song called “Girl on Girl,” before taking the lead on her own “Cheerleader” from 2012’s Strange Mercy. The pair then went really old school for a cover of Deee-Lite’s “Groove Is in the Heart.”

This isn’t the first time St. Vincent has popped up in Marfa recently. Earlier this month, she was featured in a short documentary from Nowness in which she sang “The Star-Spangled Banner” and reflected on her relationship with her home state. She played Dallas back in the spring for a collaboration with the Dallas Symphony Orchestra, as well. After a busy 2014 in which she toured behind her Grammy-winning St. Vincent, this year feels like a well-earned chance to kick back and have some fun.
