Last week Eater National wrote about a new electronic tip jar that takes credit and debit cards. So, in case you really wanted to leave a tip, but didn’t have any cash, now you have a convenient second option: dip your plastic.
The “DipJar” charges all cards one dollar per swipe. Then, the tips are allocated amongst the staff based on hours worked.
The creator of the DipJar, Ryder Kessler, came up with the idea after observing exhausted baristas who were dealing with an influx of customers from a festival outside their coffee shop. Kessler inquired if it meant more money, and they explained that since cash was basically nonexistent, nope. Plastic dominates transactions and so tips no longer help pad their hourly wage.
The DipJar is in a testing phase at a few premier locations right now, while they work out all the kinks. But, they hope it will be available soon.
