In a huge win for fans of free events that are fun for the whole family, Asian culture and the fall season as a whole, the Dallas Moon Festival is returning to Flag Pole Hill Park on Sept. 6.
The festival, which is celebrating its second year, is inspired by the mid-autumn moon festivals that are common across Asian cultures. Traditionally, these events have honored the harvest season and the gathering of families and communities. Dallas’ Moon Festival aims to do the same with food, art and live performances that represent the full scope of Asian culture in the city.
The main stage will host traditional dance performances from across Asia and the Pacific Islands, including the elegant Korean fan dance known as Buchaechum and Tinikling, the national dance of the Philippines. Fetu u le Pasikia, a dance company based in Fort Worth, will be returning to the festival to showcase their crowd-pleasing Polynesian dance and costumes.
The Golden Tiger Taekwondo Elite Team will be making its Dallas Moon Festival debut. The team will demonstrate jaw-dropping sparring sequences and seemingly defy gravity to kick a board in half for your amusement. Taekwondo is a highly athletic and competitive sport, but the dance-like precision of these choreographed sequences puts the “art” back in “martial arts.”
Food will be one of the main draws at the festival. Food trucks and stands will serve up dishes like street food, special beverages, and desserts from across the continent. Much of it is fresh and prepared on-site, so if you’re looking for the festival but your maps app is busted, just follow the savory smell.
Between performances and meals, there will be plenty of games and shopping to fill the rest of the day. Activities like lantern making will keep kids both entertained and enriched, and local vendors will be more than happy to hook you up with a souvenir.
The Dallas Moon Festival will take place at Flag Pole Hill Park (8015 Doran Circle) on Saturday, Sept. 6, from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m. Admission is free. Guests are encouraged to bring their own chairs and blankets, as seating for performances will be limited. More information can be found on the event’s Facebook page.
