Dan Cathy, president and COO of Chick-fil-A, recently was a guest on an Atlanta-area radio talk show, where he denounced gay marriage, again, saying: “I think we are inviting God’s judgment on our nation when shake our fist at Him and say, ‘We know better than you as to what constitutes a marriage.’

“I pray God’s mercy on our generation that has such a prideful, arrogant attitude, to think that we have the audacity to define what marriage is about.”

Social media blew up. New store openings have been protested and boycotts promised.

In response, yesterday, Chick-fil-A corporate issued a statement via its Facebook page, which has over 5 million followers:

Dallas, make your New Year’s Resolution Count!

We’re $13,000 away from our End-of-Year campaign goal, with just a five days left! We’re ready to deliver — but we need the resources to do it right. If Dallas Observer matters to you, please contribute today to help us expand our current events coverage when it’s needed most.

$30,000

“The Chick-fil-A culture and service tradition in our restaurants is to treat every person with honor, dignity and respect — regardless of their belief, race, creed, sexual orientation or gender. We will continue this tradition in the over 1,600 Restaurants run by independent Owner/Operators. Going forward, our intent is to leave the policy debate over same-sex marriage to the government and political arena.

(…)

Our mission is simple: to serve great food, provide genuine hospitality and have a positive influence on all who come in contact with Chick-fil-A.”

So, they’re out of the condemnation business and back to chicken. Just like that.

Then, on Dan Cathy’s page, around 10 p.m. last night, he posted this:

“I’m keeping the main thing, the main thing. Chick-fil-A is about great food, great service and genuine hospitality for all.”

Unless, of course.
