Dallas rapper BigXThaPlug, whose 2024 release Take Care was named one of the 50 best albums of 2024 by NPR, was arrested on Wednesday morning and booked with possession of less than two ounces of marijuana, after being pulled over for driving with expired tags.
As reported by Billboard, officers pulled over the rapper's vehicle just after midnight and claimed to smell marijuana as they approached the car. After asking BigX, 26-year-old Xavier Landum, and his passenger to step out of the vehicle, police found cigarettes and a “green leafy substance” in the center console and a handgun in the passenger-side door.
His passenger, 22-year-old Cleodist Landum, had an active warrant from Bexar County and was charged with possession of marijuana and unlawful carrying of a weapon. Both men are currently in custody at the Arlington City Jail.
This arrest comes just a few months before BigX leaves to support Lil Baby on his WHAM World Tour this June. The first two stops are in Texas, with the second show happening at the American Airlines Center.
BigXThaPlug blew up over the last few years thanks to tracks such as “Texas” and “Levels” that put BigX’s commanding voice over laid-back hip-hop. In 2023 he launched his own label, 600 Entertainment. He also recently performed at the Philadelphia Eagles’ Super Bowl afterparty.
In a recent profile with Billboard, the Dallas native gave a crash course in DFW slang, explaining terms like “On Me,” “Fo Shit Sho” and “T-Jones.”
BigX's bail is set at $500, while his passenger's is set at $16,000, according to Arlington PD records. His mugshot was shared by TMZ.
BigXThaPlug's was set to be released Thursday, according to the X's DJ, DJ Bubba.
"He will be out by tomorrow," DJ Bubba told the Observer via text. "Seems as if the Arlington police department has been targeting people leaving the studio. He didn't do anything wrong."
In addition to touring the country together, Bubba and X have spent years recording music at the Dirty Glove Bastard studio in Arlington. Among the regulars at the DGB studio are DFW rappers BashForTheWorld and Lil CJ Kasino.
