In mid-July, I rounded up new music releases and received feedback from a reader that I should include all genres.
He was an electronic artist named Ab Ex (real name Jason Hensel), who released an album called Zula on July 1. It took me to unexpected places with the production, to a techno world that made me want to play video games like Rez and trip out on some “gardening.” It’s an album I recommend for focus work or if you want a chill dancefloor in your living room with some LED lights to make it come alive. I’ve played “These People Would Be Free,” “There’s No Fixin’ Me” and “Go Away” an insane number of times while at the Observer office.
Everyone consumes music differently. Some look on TikTok for new music. Some read album reviews or watch The Needle Drop. Others like looking at playlists and saving the songs they like for their personal ones. The dedicated few who come here for new music, I hope you read and hear something you like.
As music fans, we can create playlists themed to mood, activity, genre, artist, or era. The concept for our second playlist is to put more unfamiliar Dallas and Fort Worth acts on your radar. Play it through or hit shuffle if my carefully crafted sequencing isn’t your thing.
At any rate, I’ll keep listening, checking out your music submissions and putting out more playlists. This playlist features songs by Rebelle Flor, a Dallas-based artist who blends trap, pop and neo-soul into her storytelling, Fort Worth's Said the People, who have just released a debut album that we covered this week and After a Night of Unsettling Dreams, a solo project started by Lulio Guevara, who is also the father of PIKE’s lead singer Del. Guevara and his son often play on bills together, which is pretty cool.
Hip-hop finishes out the playlist with new releases by Montana 700, HeadHuncho Amir, Scuttino and S3nsi Molly. The former Def Jam artist has gone independent and is pushing her new single, “Cougar.”
Please email me if you have an artist we’re absolutely missing or if you have some ideas for future playlists.
