Update, March 28: The Zodiac Room at Neiman Marcus' flagship location on Main Street will continue service through the end of the year. OpenTable is wide open for reservations.

Marc Metrick, Saks Global's Chief Executive Officer, said in a statement that they admire the city's passion and unwavering dedication to the store's legacy.

"The potential reimagination of this iconic shopping destination reinforces Saks Global’s commitment to redefining the luxury shopping experience. As we explore opportunities for the Downtown store, along with the planned renovation at the NorthPark store, we will evaluate the opportunity to utilize both locations to serve different customer needs in the Dallas market.”

As we reported earlier on Feb. 18, after more than 100 years, Neiman Marcus, the cornerstone of downtown Dallas fashion and industry icon, is closing its Main Street location on March 31. Evidently, they couldn't negotiate a new lease, so they're closing shop and moving everything to the NorthPark location.

We're personally crushed. The Observer offices are just blocks away and I had thousands of frequent flyer miles at the perfume counters. My pockets and purse are littered with paper sample strips; I'll inhale them randomly and I don't know why, but a good smell relaxes me. Honestly, I was obsessed. And I loved going to the store around Christmas time, acting like maybe I had money to spend. They knew I didn't and they didn't care. It was also the only place I ever took my kids for Santa portraits. Santaland at Neiman's was epic.

Even though there were empty tables recently, the place is completely booked through March 31.

The Zodiac Room on the sixth floor has its own lore. This lunch-only restaurant is where ladies lunch after exhausting shopping trips. A softer power lunch. In a Chanel suit. The simple menu has soups, sandwiches, a few lighter entrees (salmon tacos, warm grains, risotto) and a hearty signature Stanley Marcus pot roast with whipped potatoes ($30). The popovers are art here, and you can order just an a la carte popover with chicken broth for $15.

I'd never been, but after hearing it was closing, I tried my luck for lunch recently. Arriving on the sixth floor around noon, I took the brass-trimmed elevators for the scenic route. A host told us they're booked solid through March 31, and there was not a seat to be had. Bummer.

We asked around a bit to see if they might extend hours to allow more people one last meal, alas, that's not in the cards right now. However, we were tipped off by someone at Neiman's to try coming in after 2 p.m. as at that time of the day, if tables are available, there's a better chance of snagging one. In fact, they close at 3 p.m. and seat guests until that time, and the full menu and kitchen are available until the last diner is served.

Unfortunately, the restaurant's OpenTable page doesn't have an alert function, which would notify users if a party cancels their reservation. Bummer.

For now, we'd recommend going on the late side of lunch and being willing to hang around for a bit — peruse the perfumes or shoes. If lunch at the Zodiac Room doesn't work out, there are plenty of other great restaurants downtown to head to.

The Zodiac Room opens at 11 a.m. every closes at 3 p.m. (Except on Sundays, the restaurant is closed.) The last day of service is March 31. Valet is located on Commerce Street.
