Spune just announced the details of its 2010 South By Southwest free day party, set to begin at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 20, at J. Black's (710 W. 6th St., Austin).
It's a strong, if not especially surprising, lineup featuring some of DFW's usual rootsy, folky suspects (Doug Burr, Telegraph Canyon, Sarah Jaffe, Seryn and The Orbans) plus Austin's Monahans and Vancouver folk singer Dan Mangan. It's also not too different from the Ramble Creek Recording Studio day show at Show Lush's Backyard Friday, 19, at which Spune artists Telegraph Canyon, Seryn, Burr and Monahans will play.
Weekly Tape Deck has assembled a more adventurous free three-day party, "Shake Some Action," at Karibu Ethiopian Restaurant (1209 E. 7th St.). Locals Fergus & Geronimo, Fungi Girls and Teenage Cool Kids are part of an interesting cross section of psychedelic, garage, punk, experimental and/or indie rock bands playing Thursday, March 18, through Saturday, March 20. Seriously, check out this lineup and reconsider if you really need a SXSW wristband at all.
And Gorilla Vs. Bear and Mexican Summer Records are teaming up for a two-part SXSW showcase Friday, March 19, at Klub Krucial (614 E. 6th St.. Best Coast, The Golden Filter, Dum Dum Girls and more will play a free, unofficial and open-to-the-public day party from noon until the end of Best Coast's 6 p.m. set. After that, the commoners are kicked out for official SXSW evening showcase with Washed Out, Memory Tapes, Real Estate and others starting at 7 p.m.
