On Friday, Texas Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick posted on X that he's seeking concurrent Senate resolutions to officially change the name of the New York Strip to the Texas Strip in the Lone Star State. Patrick was inspired to make the change after meeting with Texas Cattle Feeders and Cattle Raisers. He asked them what their favorite cut of steak was, and a few said the New York Strip. But, as he explains in the post, New York has mostly dairy cows, while Texas has 12.2 million head of cattle, the most in America.
"Just because a New York restaurant named Texas beef a New York Strip in the 19th century doesn’t mean we need to keep doing that," Patrick writes.
And that's how we rename a cut of meat.
Just Texas isn't enough for Patrick, though. He hopes this catches on "across the country and around the globe."
This comes hot on the heels of the news that KFC is moving its headquarters from Kentucky to Texas, prompting Texas Gov. Greg Abbott to suggest changing the company's name to Texas Fried Chicken.
Yes, Restaurants, Actually.
Patrick is asking all restaurants to "change the name of this strip of meat the next time they reprint their menus, and grocery stores to do the same." We're sure restaurants and butchers around the state will be jubilant to get in the crosshairs of this potentially contentious name change.
And if you're wondering if the Texas legislature will tackle real issues like property taxes, well, Patrick sees this as a simple issue to help the Texas beef market.
"In a world filled with serious issues that we address every day at the Texas Capitol, this simple resolution will help better market Texas beef. That’s good for the Texas cattle industry. The Cattle Associations sure liked the idea," he continued on the post.
Ranchers and Texans have a lot of feelings about this. For many, so long as property taxes are driving people out of their homes, they're not in the mood for jokes.
Cut our property taxes!

I’m a Texas cattle raiser and a staunch conservative. Why not spend your time and effort on real issues? This is so lame.

You know what would make Texas strip the best? Property tax free beef

Whereas others are game for the name change (but seem to prefer ribeye). Many are sharpening their knives:
This, I love!!!!

🥩
I support this. Also, ribeye is superior.
