Way back in the early '80s, there was a magical Puerto Rican band filled with hit singles and pretty boys breaking hearts in shopping malls from San Juan to San Francisco. This band was called Menudo. They were one of the first "boy bands," destined to stay that way due to the revolutionary (and kind of creepy) procedure of replacing all members when they turned 16 or their voices changed. Like a snake shedding its skin, Menudo remained a young creature, and most of its members' careers were over before they could drive. There was, however, one exceptional child that rose from the masses to take his unlikely seat at the table of international pop superstardom. This child's name was Ricky Martin. After several years of Latin success, he released his first English-language album in 1999, and the satanically-catchy guilty pleasure "Livin' La Vida Loca" made him a sensation. The single permeated the bodies of millions of people and turned Ricky into a heartthrob. Little sisters and grandmothers everywhere sat gaping in front of the television soaking up the sexual healing as Martin brought his all-singing, all-dancing, all-sexing revue to the world.
