Hemming together Dallas’ radical fringe is a Deep Ellum legacy. It takes balls for a community to create and perform on its own terms, just a DART stop away from the meticulously structured, high falutin’ Arts District. And still, it does. We’re all better humans because of that. Honoring the mural, outsider and DIY-everything playground is the Deep Ellum Arts Festival’s backbone, which begins its 19th installment on Friday and runs through Sunday. Main Street converts into a sensory buffet as musicians file on and off four stages, artisans sell and make work in pedestrian spaces and the area’s restaurants emerge, creating the two most delicious words in the history of press releases: a “food village.” I know what you’re thinking: “My dog loves festivals; what about him?” Bring him along, but make sure his coat is extra fluffy on Sunday for the annual pet parade.
