Help us weather the uncertain future

We know — the economic times are hard. We believe that our work of reporting on the critical stories unfolding right now is more important than ever.

We need to raise $6,000 to meet our goal by August 10. If you’re able to make a contribution of any amount, your dollars will make an immediate difference in helping ensure the future of local journalism in Dallas. Thanks for reading the Dallas Observer.

The Oscars: It’s the one night of the year where we kick back and watch as rich people congratulate each other on their involvement in crafting a commercial product. Then we eat lots of snack food. Even the most cynical among us allow the walls to drop for a night and get caught up in the speculation, the fashion policing and the glitz — all of which is best experienced with a group. You’ve got two great options for your communal Oscar experience this year, starting with the Movie Award Viewing Party at 6:30 p.m. in the historic Texas Theatre (231 W. Jefferson). Dress to the nines and enjoy drink specials all night at this free event, and enter to win passes to the Oak Cliff Film Festival during the Pick the Winners contest. Or head north on U.S. 75 to Studio Movie Grill, 11170 N. Central Expressway, for its officially sanctioned Oscar Experience shindig at 6 p.m., which benefits the USA Film Festival. Tickets are $45 to $75 and include an official Oscars program, dinner, drinks, dessert and a live auction. Call 214-821-6300.
