Like many of you, I missed the one-day-only "soft" opening of The Eight Track Museum because I was knee-deep in family, fruitcake and festivities on Christmas Day. Thankfully, our own Robert Wilonsky was there to document the historic day that Dallas became home to the coolest concept for a museum since the Portland's Velveteria: The Museum of Velvet Paintings. Yes Dallas, thanks to James "Big Bucks" Burnett the 700-square-foot museum, located in the heart of the Deep Ellum Foundation building, 2630 E. Commerce St., houses more than 3,000 eight-track cartridges, and other formats ranging from wax cylinders to vinyl LPs to iPods. Monday night marks the official opening and debut of the Cloud 8 Gift Shop, which will now offer a pretty groovy line of Eight Track Museum shirt, as well as vintage LPs, eight-tracks and CDs for sale. Chris Frantz of Talking Heads and Tom Tom Club fame will release a live album on Big Bucks Burnett's Cloud 8 imprint early next year, and Frantz and wife/bandmate Tina Weymouth will attend the opening shindig. It starts at 7 p.m., and will include an in-museum performance by Dallas' own The O's. Also, Dallas-based singer/songwriter Stu Dicious opens with some "Stiff Records-inspired" material.
