While everyone else is taking in saccharine Christmas tales and catching their fourth viewing of that Twilight movie, might I suggest something a little more challenging? I know that this time of year, most people like films that evoke a certain coziness and ramp up the sentimentality. But some of us like something a little more edgy, particularly after a mind-numbing day of Christmas shopping. And to those people, I recommend a screening of Der Baader Meinhoff Komplex, a German film by director Uli Edel that examines the Red Army Faction, a radical terrorist organization in 1970s Germany that fought against what they saw as the "new fascism"--a country run by people with Nazi ties who kowtowed to American imperialism. With its graphic, bloody violence and unsettling examination of how quickly and easily people embrace bloodshed as a means to an end, this is not a film that will leave you warm and fuzzy. But it is a beautifully acted piece, with a stunning turn by The Lives of Others' Martina Gedeck. And its fast pace and rapid-fire subtitles will certainly take your mind off that inevitable trip to the holiday hell that is NorthPark. Der Baader Meinhoff Komplex plays as part of the Magnolia at the Modern series at 6 and 8:45 p.m. Friday, 5 p.m. Saturday, and 2 and 4:45 p.m. Sunday at the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth, 3200 Darnell St. Tickets are $8.50.
