Thankfully unrelated to the heavy-handed '70s hard rock guitarist Ronnie Montrose, this is actually Montrose Cunningham, a Dallas multi-instrumentalist who worships at the funky altar of Prince and Terrance Trent D'Arby. Inertia, his sophomore effort, released in 2004, is full of soulful funk and sexy ballads, never straying too far from the influence of the Purple One. Copping his fashion sense from Sly Stone doesn't hurt one bit either as Dallas' Montrose is retro in all the right ways. Singer-songwriter Jevette mixes some folk and blues into her smooth R&B, coming across as a postmodern version of Mavis Staples, full of attitude and confidence. Thoughtful and spirited, Jevette finds a nice meeting place of modern metropolitan soul and the classic pulse of Motown and Stax. Rarely does Dallas offer two finer homegrown purveyors of urban soul. The show is from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m., and "refreshments" will be provided.
