Circuses have changed a lot over the years. Freak shows are illegal in many states, and animal trainers are far more rare nowadays. Even as these circus icons wane, however, clowns and acrobats are in their prime. The Lone Star Circus Arts Center presents Cirque Banquisté, an international showcase of aerialists, acrobats, clowns and jugglers, to bring in the new year. The event is headed up by the organization's founder and creative director Fanny Kerwich, an eighth-generation circus performer and renowned aerialist who has toured the world. It's only appropriate then that the event includes a wide array of artists from many performing traditions and backgrounds. The show includes such artists as the Peruvian aerialist Angelo Rodriguez and Canadian master juggler Réjean St. Jules as well as artists from France, Italy and many more. What better way to celebrate the new year than by taking in performances that have their roots in time immemorial? The show takes place through January 1 at the Rosewood Center for Family Arts, 5938 Skillman St. Show times vary. Tickets range from $20 to $45.
