  • Ari District Thai Bistro

2525 Inwood Rd #123 North Dallas

    469-778-0075

Once open for dinner, Ari District is now strictly a breakfast/brunch affair. Fresh breakfast fare and baked goods are prepared daily, and standouts include pork and taro “pup” pies that are as cute as they are delicious, and egg sandwiches and souffle pancakes. Expected Thai dishes such as pad kee maow and pad Thai are also on the menu, as are various curries, noodles and soups along with coffee and tea. The baked goods, however, are really the standout and can sell out fast, so get there early. If the pup pies are all gone, you could do a lot worse than trying one of the black garlic cheesy spinach rolls. Or two.

Cubano sandwiches are made with roasted pork, ham, swiss cheese, pickle and spicy mustard and are served with fried plantain chips and a signature mojo sauce.

  • Bilad Bakery & Restaurant

    850 S. Greenville Ave. Richardson & Vicinity

    972-744-9599

The Iraqi restaurant Bilad is a neighborhood institution. The superb bakery got its start turning out excellent samoon bread from Iraq and trays of delightful desserts like pistachio puffs and baklava. Bilad has an excellent kitchen serving Iraqi specialties, including some of the region’s better shawarma and falafel, zhug (an acidic hot pepper sauce), fresh tabbouleh and garlicky hummus. Kebab meat may look charred on the outside, but the interior is still perfectly tender. Grab a bag of that samoon bread as you leave, or visit the small grocery next door.

Top pick: The shawarma sandwiches, served on loaves of fresh Iraqi bread with fluffy soft interiors, are no-doubt, unanimous-vote choices for the Texas Sandwich Hall of Fame, especially if you ask that your sandwich be made spicy.

Fun fact: Bilad makes a point of providing food for their neighbors experiencing homelessness.

  • Boulangerie

1921 Greenville Ave. East Dallas & Lakewood

    214-821-3477

If you’re looking for a well-made baguette, the Village Baking Co.'s Boulangerie is a good place to find one. If you’re lucky, you’ll witness the baker pull several from the oven as you walk through the door. Not everything is quite that fresh, but everything you see was baked that morning, from the croissants to the éclairs to the massive boules on the shelves behind the counter. Come in the afternoon and get a sandwich made on the same bread. Ham, cheese and butter sounds rather plain, but it’s one of the best ways to enjoy a baguette.

  • Bread Winners Café & Bakery

5560 W. Lovers Lane Park Cities

    214-351-3339

A friendly and casual bakery-café with a French bistro feel shelling out generous portions, Bread Winners is a Dallas Observer favorite. Cakes, pies and pastries are made fresh daily, perfect for those on the go or for noshing on the brick patio. It's difficult not to arrive and find the place packed-especially during brunch, when the flat iron steak and eggs and scrambles are king and queen. That shouldn't stop you. The wait for a table is rarely more than 15 minutes.

  • Bresnan Bread & Pastry

    301-B E. Louisiana St. Allen/McKinney

    214-578-1979

Bresnan's Bread & Pastry is a small spot in McKinney's quaint downtown area that is a grab-and-go establishment as well as an online-only pre-order business that has developed a loyal following; orders are picked up in the Design District in Dallas on Saturday mornings. Bresnan's coffee offerings are supplied by Noble Coyote Roasters, and there is a drip coffee, espresso, latte or cappuccino to meet anyone's coffee desires. Grab a loaf of rustic sourdough ($9) to take home for the weekend, with chewy crust that encases pillowy bread that skillfully nails all the sourdough marks. As remarkable as the sourdough is, the other pastries from Bresnan truly shine. They make a different dough for each pastry and bread, so the morning bun's texture (with the hint of citrus and cardamom) hits just a bit differently than the vanilla-cream danish topped with orange and pistachio. Both were a delight. Muffins, brownies and cookies are available in addition to the pastries. And then there are kouign amanns, the buttery-flaky-sweet concoction that we've sung the praises of other spots for rising to challenge of making the elusive kouign amanns, and are thrilled to report Bresnan's as another exquisite version.

  • Brian's Coffee

    4109 TX-121 Carrollton/Farmers Branch

    469-900-8019

Brian’s Coffee Roasters in Carrollton offers house roasted coffee and European pastries. The coffee menu includes a handful espresso-based coffees — cortado, Americano, cappuccino — as well as lattes (including a Spanish and matcha version). The coffee beans at Brian's Coffee are sourced from Guatemala and are roasted in-house. Brian's Coffee is not just a cafe with pastries and coffee, however. There are also few specialty Korean items on the menu, including the omelet rice (omurice) dish made with fried rice and a tornado egg topped with a house demi-glace, kind of like the dish we wrote about at Kyuramen recently.

Central Market is where all the well-heeled Southlakers come to stock their refrigerators and pantries with organic produce, imported olives, fancy cupcakes and aged balsamic vinegar. An amazingly wide array of produce offers no less than eight different varieties of apples and every exotic fruit imaginable, plus precut vegetables ready to be stir-fried or sauteed. The meat and seafood department has everything you need for your next fancy dinner party, from fresh mussels to whole prime filets of beef. A huge wine department will delight the oenophile, while teetotalers will find solace in the wall of loose teas. • Cheesecake Royale Bakery

9018 Garland Rd. White Rock Lake Area

    214-328-0424

If there's a polar opposite to the caloric overdose represented by Cheesecake Factory, this Lakewood shop should be a prime candidate. Founded as a counter in the back of a Greek restaurant, the bakery is a full-fledged operation in its own storefront -- and still family owned. Fresh ingredients and the aroma emanating from the bakery have made this business so popular that there is now a wholesale arm serving sweets across Texas and beyond. Whether purchased at this location or from a far-flung seller, the cakes -- from the traditional New York to the Key Lime Margarita and dulce de leche cheesecakes to gourmet Italian rum and white chocolate macadamia cakes -- pies and desserts have been successfully sating many a sweet tooth since 1995.

  • Chip Cookies

    2401 Preston Rd. Plano

    469-298-3711

With thousands of social media fans, near-perfect Google reviews and a record of rapid expansion across state lines, Chip Cookies has become a sought-after treat for Texas cookie enthusiasts.

The Chip Cookies name is perhaps a nod to the delightfully gooey and abnormally sized chips that are studded throughout many of the cookies here.

The menu includes six standard flavors: the cocoa, Bischoff chip, dark chocolate, sugar cookie, butter cookie and, of course, the OG chocolate chip. Come back for weekly flavors like the peppermint chip or the red velvet with cream cheese frosting. Chip Cookies is most highly praised for its buttery, crispy coating that breaks into a soft and chewy center.

  • Creme De La Cookie

    6706 Snider Plaza Park Cities

    214-265-6672

In Snider Plaza, you can slum it or go haughty. At Crème de la Cookie, you get cute while going highfalutin. Founder Toni Rivard opened this sweets shop in summer 2009. Since then, the boutique has received rave reviews at home and nationally, especially for the OMG Chocolate Chip Cookies. It's now among the top sellers. As is the red velvet "Scarlet O'Hara" cupcake. Rivard and staff are on the forefront of popular confections. The shop makes sure that the sweet-tooth hordes have enough cake balls (e.g., chocolate-covered vanilla and cookies and cream) and high-end takes on humble childhood favorites such as the whoopie pies with marshmallow buttercream and Screamin O's (fudge brownie towers covered in chocolate ganache). It also offers a small selection of gluten-free treats, making sure to leave no dessert lover out in the cold.

  • Cuban Dulceria International Bakery

    2662 N. Josey Lane #228 Carrollton/Farmers Branch

    972-242-3797

Rita and Sara Vasquez, the owners of International Bakery Cuban Dulcería in Carrollton, are well-known for their family bakery. You’ll likely come here to pick up a cake, a few loaves of bread or some other baked sweet that’s loads better than the stuff you’d get at a typical grocery store. Make sure to book a little extra time, though. You’ll want to linger here. A visit that neglects a Cuban sandwich at this suburban bakery is a food crime of the highest order. It’s without a doubt the best version of the classic sandwich you can buy in and around Dallas. The roast pork is tender and flavorful and the ham is thinly shaved in a sandwich that isn’t at all greasy or heavy. If pig isn’t your thing, the ropa vieja takes a close second place. This sandwich is filled with rich, stewed beef that soaks the bread with its viscous sauce. Wash it down with a Cuban coffee or a soda. This little bakery storefront has plenty of both.

  • Doughregarde's

5625 Village Glen Drive, Suite 100 North Dallas

    469-659-6371

This new bakery works in tandem with restaurants at The Village; they supply the Our Daily Bread to Meridian. But, they also have their own cases full of pastries from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily. They take some fun spins on classics, like a pecan sticky bun made with a nest of flaky croissant bread instead of the typical sweet bread. They also use local ingredients, like the Luscher's Red Hot kolache. They offer a variety of pastries, breakfast sandwiches and cookies. For lunch, try the fresh crunchy baguette that holds a generous amount of thinly sliced fatty and funky housemade capicola, with an equally lavish slather of French butter that is freckled with sour, crunchy cornichons.

  • EatZi's Market & Bakery

3403 Oak Lawn Ave. Uptown/Oak Lawn

    214-526-1515

Popular isn't a sufficient adjective to describe this shop specializing in chef Jay Valley's prepared eats. During lunch, Eatzi's seems to be nothing but lines. There are long lines at the counter; there are long lines for the cash register. Yet, the customers brave it all, deeming it all worth it. The Box Lunches are worth it. The entrées, like the Kobe meatloaf and the salmon croquettes, are worth it. So are the cakes and pies. Salads are big with customers in need of a quick, light lunch. But it's more than a midday meal spot. Breakfast see folks stopping in for the cherry cheese pinwheel, carrot pecan muffin and platters to share with their office mates.
