Must (still) be SXSW backwash pleasantly infecting our area, as there's quite a bevy of shows on tap for this evening around the region...
First off, we have soulful pop rockers Fundamental Elements
tonight at Dada. The last week of the band's shows were canceled due to
guitarist Joe McGill's emergency appendectomy, but it appears as if Joe
is well enough for the Dallas gig to happen. Good thing for us, too.
This quintet from St. Louis invests its brand of white soul with just
enough grit to make it more than palatable. Lead vocalist/trumpet
player Russ Mohr is especially engaging.
Over at the Fairmount in Fort Worth tonight, famed singer/songwriter/pianist/guitarist Leon Russell
is also set to make an appearance. Still giving it his all at 66 years
of age, Russell can still rattle the cage with his raspy and powerful
vocals. And he's played with the likes of Jerry Lee Lewis, George
Harrison, Elton John, Willie Nelson, Eric Clapton and about 100 more,
so this should be an experience worth humping it out to Cowtown to see.
Cooler still: Keegan McInroe from Catfish Whiskey (who I wrote about here a week or so ago) is opening.
Up in Denton at Dan's Silverleaf, the Dentonites in Mexican/folk pop band Mariachi Quetzal
are at Dan's Silverleaf. What's interesting here: How they are going to
fit all 16 members of the band on the stage? Logistics aside, this is a
great opportunity to catch some traditional Hispanic music in an
intimate venue.
And, finally, some of you young 'uns might want to catch the Saints and
Sinners Tour in what is sure to be a slacker fashion experience at the Hollywood Undead/Senses Fail/Haste the Day/BrokeNCYDE
bill going on at House of Blues tonight. Talk about testosterone
overload: Just the machismo in Senses Fail and Haste the Day alone
ought to keep the lights on, even if the storm knocks out the
electricity. Plus, Hollywood Undead offers up some premium metal/rap
cheese that ought to be something to behold.
