The website for the Bikini Basketball League is a bare-bones affair, little more than a clock ticking down the seconds to...well, it doesn't really say exactly what is happening in a shade over 35 days, but one can make an educated guess, particularly with the help of the accompanying blurb.
"The league is for Sexy Athletic Ladies from around the world," it reads. "We have several teams already: Atlanta Fleet Angels, Miami Spice, New York Knockouts, Hollywood Hotties, Orlando Lady Cats, L.A. Ice and Chicago Desire."
You'll notice the list doesn't include Dallas, which is a terrible shame. A travesty even. But before you are consumed by grief, take heart in the words of BBL president A.J. McArthur. He told NBC's Off the Bench that the league is "looking at franchises in Dallas and Minnesota, plus one more."
For a bit of context, it's worth reading Off the Beat's discussion with Donovan Price, a Chicago dubstep producer who is now the owner and general manager the Desire.
"We're working off of the model that the Lingerie Football League has done so well," Price told the blog. "This is a new era in sports, and a new era of people wanting to be entertained. The marriage of basketball and beautiful girls is a concept whose time has come."
By "concept," of course, he means women playing basketball in revealing swimwear.
"But it's not all about the bikinis," Price said. "You know, Hooters is what it is, but the wings are actually good."
Our own Anna Merlan, who stumbled across the blog post, is not so concerned about the quality of the basketball but for the welfare of the players.
"Please be sure to note that playing basketball in a bikini would hurt like a motherfucker," she said. I'll take her word for it.
