You could say a lot of things about Miss Candy Barr, but accusing her of leading a boring life is not something you could get away with. The famed stripper/burlesque dancer and one-time Dallas resident had ties to a number of fascinating men (including Mr. Jack Ruby), gallivanted with mobsters, went on the lam to Mexico, and taught movie stars how to dance. She was in and out of trouble with the law, even making an appeal to the Supreme Court at one point, and—upon their rejection of her case—landing in prison. Her personality, perseverance and beauty kept her in the spotlight throughout her life, even when she rejected it in her later years. Theatre Three’s new comedy, Candy Barr’s Last Dance reflects on the legendary exotic dancer in a tale that follows three of her fellow strippers to her 2005 funeral. The play, directed by Ronnie Claire Edwards, makes its world premiere at the Norma Young Arena inside Theatre Three, 2800 Routh Street, Thursday, August 7 at 7:30 p.m., and can also be seen on Thursdays at 7:30 p.m.; Fridays and Saturdays at 8 p.m. and Sundays at 2 and 7:30 p.m. through August 31, with an additional performance on Monday, August 11 at 7:30 p.m. Tickets range between $10 and $50 and may be purchased online at theatre3dallas.com.
