Uptown Players' regional premiere of the 2006 Broadway hit, The History Boys, passed the critics' test after its opening weekend. A cast of young men and a few veterans--Bradley Campbell, Wendy Welch, Rick Espaillat and David Plunkett--explore many angles of academia. Eight high school seniors at a British boys' school attempt to finagle acceptance into Oxford and Cambridge through admission loopholes. They are guided by the various influences of their professors: the jaded female history teacher (Welch), the recent graduate with fresh world experience (Plunkett) and a beloved, inspiring English professor (Campbell)--who controversially blurs the unspoken teacher-student boundaries. What is the value of education--knowledge, culture, life skills? And what are the responsibilities of teachers--as educators, guides and human influences? A classroom is always more than lectures and lesson plans. The History Boys runs through May 3 at KD Studio Theatre (2600 N. Stemmons Freeway, Suite 180). Showtimes are 8 p.m. Thursdays through Saturdays and 2 p.m. Sundays. Tickets are $25 to $30. Call 214-219-2718 or visit uptownplayers.org for tickets.
