A plethora of Victorian-style houses, pioneer homes and other old tyme-y buildings were brought in from neighboring cities and reassembled here to create a sort of interactive museum-slash-city park that’s a popular field-trip destination for the grade-school set. You can putter around in the old general store, watch a blacksmith hammering away, explore a 19th-century hotel and even pet the friendly donkeys at a small farm, all in the name of showing kids what life was like before Angry Birds came along. Plenty of shady trees make it an ideal picnicking spot.

(Pro tip: The red course is the more challenging and fun of the two options.) The Center for Animal Research and Education is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization dedicated to education, research, rescue, and long-term care for exotic animals. Located on 20 acres in Bridgeport, TX. CARE currently provides a permanent home to over 40 animals including mountain lions, African lions, tigers, black and spotted leopards, bobcats, ring-tail lemurs, llamas, and a coati. The animals of CARE come from a wide variety of places. Some of the animals were abused, abandoned, or bred to be the pets of private collectors before they came to the facility. Others were retired from performance acts, acquired from zoos which encountered financial difficulty, or taken in from other sanctuaries that reached their capacity. Regardless of an animal’s origins, they are all given tremendous love and world class husbandry when they find a home at CARE.

The mausoleum at Crown Hill is designated as a Dallas historical landmark. It was built in 1940 in the art deco style of the '20's and '30's and has been renowned for its artistic value, including its ageless materials, handcrafted details, and antique stain glass windows. The site of the cemetery was once a family dairy farm owned by C. W. Smith, who constructed the mausoleum as a memorial to his then recently deceased parents and daughter-in-law. Crown Hill's most celebrated resident is bank robber, Bonnie Parker of Bonnie & Clyde.
