As The Washington Post and The Wall Street Journal note today, President Obama will give a speech some time after Labor Day in which he will unveil "a plan to create jobs, stimulate the economy and reduce the federal deficit." (Tom Leppert beat him to it!) But the president won't do so till getting input from the highers-up on his Council on Jobs and Competitiveness, created earlier this year to figure out a way for government to partner with the private sector. To that end, the council's holding two meetings during which it'll brainstorm in public -- one's scheduled for next week in Portland, while another's on the calendar at SMU a week from tomorrow.
Kate Bedingfield in the White House Press Office has sent along a roster of bold-faced names scheduled to appear on the Hilltop next week, which follows after the jump; it includes Secretary of Transportation Ray LaHood and Southwest Airlines CEO Gary Kelly, for starters. Ah -- and speaking of Southwest Airlines, the Dallas meeting will kick off with a field trip to Love Field, so attendees can get a glimpse of the modernization program currently under construction. Appropriate, since the Dallas meeting "will focus on the importance of infrastructure investment to creating jobs across sectors of the American economy." Could always build a hotel.

WASHINGTON, DC - On Wednesday, August 31st and Thursday, September 1st, the President's Council on Jobs and Competitiveness will hold the next in a series of Jobs and Competitiveness Listening and Action Sessions with local businesses and stakeholders to discuss how the public and private sectors can partner to create opportunity and support job creation. These sessions are part of a series of regional Council Listening and Action Sessions that are taking place around the country as a result of the President's challenge that the Council bring new voices to the table and ensure that everyone can participate and inform the Council's work and recommendations.
The ideas and information exchanged at these events will help inform the future policy work of the President's Council on Jobs and Competitiveness, which meets with President Obama each quarter to recommend critical steps that both the private and public sectors can take to create jobs and help strengthen the economy.The August 31st session will take place at Portland State University in Portland, Oregon and will focus on the steps that we can take as a country to curb our engineering shortage, which threatens America's role as the world's leading innovator and hinders our ability to create jobs. The September 1st session will take place at Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas and will focus in the importance of infrastructure investment to creating jobs across sectors of the American economy.
