In the age-old debate of which came first — the chicken or the egg — Egg N Bird proves it doesn’t matter; both can harmoniously coexist.

You know that place you drive by a hundred times and mentally file under "Maybe someday?" That was Egg N Bird for us. Nestled in a repurposed fast-food joint, it didn’t exactly scream "hidden gem."

We were looking for a quick grab-and-go breakfast. Fully intending to hit the drive-thru and be on our way, we decided — on a whim — to go inside. And we're so glad we did, because ... wow.

Everything about it was a surprise. From the Cordon Bleu-trained, Michelin-awarded chef at the helm to the full-blown egg train theme.

And not at all like a random mural or a one-off sign themed. We’re talking a moving train display, to-go cabinet locker/incubators, an egg-and-chicken coop situation straight out of a science fair and rotating TV “windows” that mimic the rolling hills you’d see on a scenic rail ride. It was immersive, oddly charming and mind-bogglingly random.

If you’re a parent trying to entertain a tiny human with high-quality food and a side of novelty that won’t break the bank, insert train whistle sound here because this is your stop, except maybe scrambling (pun intended) to stop them from touching the delicate displays.

In today’s economy, where egg-flation is no laughing matter, it was quite a pleasant surprise to find nearly everything on the menu is less than $10. The first Texas outpost of a California-born franchise, there are three other locations in the Golden State.

The Korean rice bowl was creamier than most. Traditional hoisin sauce was subbed for spicy mayo, and a vinegar slaw added a nice zest and crunch. The egg could have been runnier, but overall, it was solid, especially for the price.

The Nashville hot chicken sandwich passes muster.

A Nashville hot chicken sandwich did pack some heat (and we're snobs here). It delivered a legit kick without going overboard. Crispy, juicy and not drowning in sauce, it possessed a balance not every hot chicken joint gets right.

Another standout was the breakfast biscuit sandwiches. A newer addition to the menu, they’re your favorite fast-food morning sammies in various flavors. These are elevated with avocado, a subtle cilantro aioli and a side packet of honey and jam. And the option to get mac and cheese and banana pudding for breakfast? Don’t judge.

Bottom line? Don’t let the exterior fool you. Open for breakfast, lunch and dinner, Egg N Bird in Plano is doing something genuinely fun, flavorful and refreshingly affordable. Whether you're there for the Instagrammability, the chef-level bites or want to feel like your meal took you somewhere, this ride is worth hopping on.
