Pastry News: Expanded Lubellas as Amazing as Ever

We ordered a full table of pastries just for good measure. Yes, everything is still amazing in their larger space.

When we first discovered Maria Becerra’s Lubellas Patisserie in late 2022, we instantly fell in love. From the buttery and flaky croissants to seasonal Danishes, we’ve yet to encounter something from Lubellas we didn’t like.

This lovely little bakery (well, it’s not as little anymore) was born out of extreme circumstances. As the COVID-19 pandemic brought the world to its knees, Becerra, who honed her craft at fine dining establishments like Bullion and Stephan Pyles, and her husband, Ismael Gonzalez, were trying to keep their heads above water — both were jobless at the time thanks to the pandemic.

Becerra put her matchless baking prowess to work while Gonzalez delivered her baked goods to customers around town. Shortly thereafter, Becerra and Gonzalez made the leap from delivering to opening Lubella’s on Ferguson Road in East Dallas’ Casa View Shopping Center.

“I can say it’s a miracle how everything is coming together for us,” Becerra told the Observer in December 2022. “We always had the dream, but that’s all it was. Honestly, my husband is the one with the vision for Lubellas to grow. But even after we began, we never imagined it would become what it is now.”

Since Becerra told us that, the business has expanded, adding 1,400 square feet and roughly 80 seats.

We were in the area recently, and once you’ve been to Lubellas (named after the Becerra children, Lu and Bella), it becomes increasingly difficult to pass without stopping. And to the surprise of absolutely nobody, Lubellas remains as great as ever. We caught a glimpse of Becerra that day while ordering — no doubt putting on another baking masterclass in the kitchen.

Our table grabbed an assortment of Lubellas goodies: An almond croissant dusted in powdered sugar, a spinach artichoke Danish (every time we try a new Danish at Lubellas, we swear it’s the best one we’ve ever had), cream cheese blueberry Danish, a slice of chocolate cake and some of the best banana bread on the planet.

Once seated, all you heard at our table was, “This is so good,” and “Wow.” This went on for a good half hour. This, we’re guessing, is normal behavior at Lubellas.

Lubellas also has savory options, such as a smoked ham sandwich with pepper jack and dijonnaise and a Caprese sandwich of sliced tomatoes, basil pesto and balsamic glaze. And the quiches (veggie, chorizo and meat lovers) at Lubellas will forever ruin quiches from anywhere else for you.

There’s something for everyone at Lubellas. Cookies, conchas, muffins, scones, bread pudding, brownies, cakes (like coconut tres leches cake and flourless chocolate cake topped with dark chocolate ganache), vanilla pastry fruit tarts topped with cream and fresh fruit, and cinnamon rolls straight out of your dreams. Brunch is available on Sunday from open to 2 p.m.
