If I were an artist, my canvas would be unique. Perhaps even sand—like that guy in South Beach who creates intricately designed sandcastles that sprawl across the beach and come complete with bridges and chambers and even little candles peeping through the windows. Local artist Scott Barber also had an unusual canvas for his works from 1998 to 2001. He used polyfiber (similar to the stuff parachutes are made of) to bridge between canvas and his later and larger aluminum works. On it, he used bright colors and forms that paid homage to Japanese pop art. Sadly, Barber passed away two years ago following a bone-marrow transplant. The Barry Whistler Gallery, 2909-B Canton St., pays homage to the late, great artist with Scott Barber: Paintings on Polyfiber, 1998-2001, on display through March 3. An opening reception takes place from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday. Call 214-939-0242 or visit barrywhistlergallery.com.
Wednesdays-Saturdays. Starts: Jan. 20. Continues through March 3
