We know — the economic times are hard. We believe that our work of reporting on the critical stories unfolding right now is more important than ever.

Let’s all take a momentary break from running marathons for breast cancer awareness and focus on the booze. Or better yet, the booze competition. Or the bartending competition. Whatever it is, you don't have to run and there's alcohol. On Wednesday, Life in Deep Ellum (2803 Taylor St.) will host an all-female speed-bartending tournament to raise money for breast cancer charities. Lady bartenders will make cocktails from a list of 50 classic recipes and be judged on their speed and accuracy. The winner will be crowned Miss Speed Rack Dallas and head to the big stage at the June national finals in New York. See and drink for yourself at 6 p.m. Wednesday. Tickets are $20.
