The spicy tuna roll at Maki Boy isn't fancy date night sushi — it's workday sushi. Ordered at the counter of this cozy icon of Irving Japanese restaurants, the roll comes in an order of either a half or a full dozen, and if you commit to 12 whole pieces of hefty sushi, you'd better come hungry.

Each roll is stuffed in equal thirds with avocado, pickled veggies and fresh, buttery-smooth tuna. The whole dish is covered with a red-orange dusting of house-made hotness, which imparts a steady, low-grade burn that outlasts the sinus-clearing wasabi by a healthy margin. Served cool, these rolls are intended to impart maximum flavor during quick consumption. Layer on a bit of pickled ginger and a decent speck of wasabi, then meditate on the convergence of heat, tang and umami. In the middle of a dismal Monday, it's Zen on a plate.
