RJ Mexican Cuisine

The West End is packed with tourist-trapping restaurants; this isn't one of them. Executive chef Ronald Von Hatten's menu focuses on tweaked regional Mexican food, including gordita and queso fundido appetizers, with a little Tex-Mex (e.g., chimichangas and fajitas) thrown in to appease the natives. Make no mistake, however, the latter truly is lip service. The stars here are the "especialidades del chef," like the chicken marinated in sour cream, cumin and cilantro, char-grilled and served under shrimp, crawfish and chipotle. For those who absolutely insist on something decidedly more homegrown there is the RJ Grande Fiesta (pork tamale, chicken relleno topped with queso, chicken enchiladas with sour cream sauce and a grilled fajita beef taco). If the weather is nice, enjoy the meal on the front patio with a margarita that includes one of the 50 tequilas available.
