Artists have until 5 p.m., September 14, to paint and sculpt skulls, skeletons, ghosts and goblins for entry into the 25th annual Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) art exhibition at the Bath House Cultural Center at White Rock Lake.
That's the deadline for artwork to be considered for the show, which will run October 15 through November 12, and that's just about three weeks away.
This show features local, regional and international artists working in traditional and contemporary styles. The theme, as always, is the celebration of dead loved ones, ex-parrots or anything or anyone else who has gone to meet his maker.
Festival curator Enrique Fernández Cervantes is asking artists to make their entries especially festive to reflect the show's 25 years of presenting works inspired by death.
All entries must be original pieces of art completed between 2009 and this year. No previous entries will be accepted. Art in all media will be considered (see this entry form for details). All two-dimensional art must be wired and suitable for hanging.
That's not your only shot of getting something displayed at the Bath House this fall and winter. September 14 also is the deadline for entries in the Bath House's Lady of the Lake art exhibit, which will run October 15 through January 28, 2012.
This one seeks artistic interpretations of the familiar bit of White Rock lore about the ghost of a young girl in dripping wet clothes who seeks rides from drivers circling the lake late at night. She tells the driver she needs a ride home and gives an address. But when the driver arrives, the girl has vanished, leaving only damp stains on the car seat. When the driver knocks on the door of the house, she's told the girl died by drowning in the lake many years before.
