One week later, word of the Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission and Fort Worth Police Department's raid on the Rainbow Lounge has reached Page A16 of this morning New York Times. The piece recaps for a national audience what the locals already know about the incident that has prompted TABC and FWPD internal inquiries and resulted Friday in Fort Worth Mayor Mike Moncrief's asking Jim Jacks, acting U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of Texas, to ride shotgun on the police department's inquiry. The piece also offers further insight into how 26-year-old Chad Gibson, by all accounts holding nothing but a bottle of water and minding his own business that night, wound up in the hospital with a skull injury.
Then there is this from Kathleen Hicks, the Fort Worth council member who represents the neighborhood in which the Rainbow Lounge is located and who's joined in the call for an independent investigation:
"It has caused a lot of soul searching within City Hall and beyond. Fort Worth has been able to move quietly along and avoid all the tension and strife that you have seen in other cities, but sometimes you need to have tension and strife. I hope that this will be a wake-up call."
