Mathew Staver will never admit it, but he has this poster hanging above his bed.

Mathew Staver's the founder and chairman of Orlando-based Liberty Counsel, which describes itself as "a nonprofit litigation, education and policy organization dedicated to advancing religious freedom, the sanctity of human life and the traditional family." Which means, of course, Staver's totally against gays and lesbians getting hitched. That's why, the very night last week the California Supreme Court overturned a ban on same-sex marriage, Staver hopped on a plane to Dallas: "for a late dinner meeting with a fund-raiser" who's gonna help him find the long green with which to "finance a campaign for the California Marriage Protection Act, a November ballot initiative that would amend the state Constitution and effectively undo the court’s decision."

The author of this bigoted tome tells The New York Times he and his moneybags "talked until the early morning hours." Sure, right -- they just "talked" till the wee small hours. I think they were just watching a very special episode of Star Trek. --Robert Wilonsky
