Maypearl Police Chief Arrested, Charged with Sexual Assault of Teenager

Maypearl Chief of Police Kevin Coffey was arrested and charged with four felonies, including sexual assault of a child, after turning himself in Wednesday afternoon.

Coffey, 49, contacted a then 14-year-old girl on Facebook two years ago, according to an arrest warrant affidavit. He sent her messages almost every day, commenting on her appearance and often being sexually explicit.

"I’ll cuff u and put u on the hood again and smack that ass lol," Coffey messaged the girl, according to investigators.

In addition to explicit Facebook messages, the teenager told investigators that she and Coffey exposed their genitals to each other during online video chats. When the girl came to Coffey's office, she said, he would "dry hump" her on his desk and penetrate her with his fingers. The girl believed Coffey was waiting until she was 17 to have vaginal intercourse with her, she told investigators.

Coffey became police chief in 2013 after three years with the department. According to his bio on Maypearl's city website he's been licensed by the state of Texas as a "sexual assault & family violence special investigator." Late Wednesday afternoon, the city of Maypearl announced he'd been fired from the department.

Computers, phones and thumb drives used by Coffey were confiscated on July 13 by members of the Texas Rangers and the Child Exploitation Unit from the Texas Attorney General's Office. He was placed on paid administrative leave until his firing.
