Theoretically, opera and heavy drinking go well together. Over-the-top spectacles plus a few cocktails should equate to amplified magnificence. And yet, that's a rookie move. Want to be persona non grata at the Winspear? Just let the booze sleep carry you away, mid-aria. (I'm lookin' at you Aïda.)
The Fort Worth Opera wants you to know that it doesn't have to be that way. You can mix the seemingly unmixable. You CAN have it all.
They've got a great program called Opera Shots, where professional cast members perform select works in local bars. (Think opera karaoke.) You show up in your casual clothes, without all of the fussiness of a big affair, and just bro down with other opera lovers and potential opera lovers. Plus there's cocktails. The next installment is tomorrow, Tuesday, February 5 and the crew will belt works from La Bohème at Embargo in Fort Worth.
They're catering the drink menu to reflect the night; you can choose from Puccini-tinis, Mimi's Mojitos, Rodolfo's Rum and Big-O shots. Warning: you might get "opera emotional" if overserved. There's no cover, but you are encouraged to RSVP here.
If 6:30 p.m. on a Tuesday in Fort Worth isn't a can-do, no worries. They're bringing Opera Shots to Dallas in March, and we'll keep you posted on that too.
