With a name like "Katya Kabanova and La Traviata: Sex, Guilt and the Diva" this installment of the Dallas Opera's Baritones and Beachballs summer event series is sure to end in tears, but for opera buffs that might just be a good thing. The Dallas Opera has joined forces with WRR Classical 101.1 FM to offer a discussions from Dr. Kevin Selfen, SMU visiting professor of music history. Selfen will delve into everyone's favorite topic, not to mention sex. The panelists will compare the heroines of Katya and Traviata; the former a married woman who fools around and the latter a courtesan who runs into obstacles when she tries to give up the sex trade for love, a la Pretty Woman. Expect lots of antiquated sexism and head shaking as the panelists reflect on how awful things were for women back in the day in spite of how much better the music was. The talking starts at 6:30 p.m. in Nancy B. Hamon Hall at the Winspear Opera House. Admission is free. RSVPs are recommended. Call 214-443-1044.
