Hankering to get out of Dallas, but bound to this slice of sunbaked, heat-stroked geography for the foreseeable future? It can seem dire; days on end of feeling trapped in an air-conditioned space will wear on you, even if you are grateful for the cold air. But this city has lots of little escapes—plenty of spaces where you can wile away the hours, making the best of the hot hand we’re dealt during the summer months. Summer at the Dallas Arboretum, 8525 Garland Road, is one such getaway. The lush green expanses of lawn and meticulously gardened spaces transport you from the sweaty concrete jungle just outside the hedged perimeter. Show up just after the gates open for the coolest escape—spread out on the crisp grass for a little breakfast picnic, explore the giant themed bird houses on the grounds, or just get lost in one of the many off-the-beaten path gardens. There’s also a froggy fountain just beyond a shaded walkway lined with crepe myrtles where you’ll find toddlers and grown-ups alike splashing to their hearts’ content. Visit on Fridays for a special family affair in Pecan Grove with face painting, petting zoo and other activities from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. The Dallas Arboretum is open daily from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m.; admission is $15 for adults, $12 for seniors, $10 for children ages 3 to 12, and free for the 2 and under set—though August brings $1 admission all month long.
