Leading up to September's Best of Dallas® 2016 issue, we're sharing (in no particular order) our 100 Favorite Dishes, the Dallas entrées, appetizers and desserts that really stuck with us this year.

For regulars at the Kessler, Trompo is nothing new. Oak Cliff native Luis Olvera has been slingin' tacos at the venue for awhile now. Back in April, Olvera finally opened a brick-and-mortar location of Trompo, a low-key taqueria that specializes in "straight-up Mexican street tacos," Olvera says.

Trompo's menu is small but it's impossible to go wrong here. Fill your taco with trompo (pork), bistek (beef) or paneer and poblano, a flavorful vegetarian option. At $1.85 each, they're equal parts cheap and fresh, a fun take on northern Mexico street food.

Tacos aside, there's one thing you shouldn't overlook on this menu: the quesadillas. These open-faced beauties more closely resemble a large taco than the cheesy quesadillas you're probably used to, but their bright, fresh flavor will make you rethink what a quesadilla should be. Go for the Gringa, ($3.85), made with pork, cilantro and onion on a flour tortilla that's got a beautifully cheesy base of fresh whole milk mozzarella. Don't skip the salsas here — the creamy, house made verde salsa is made of dreams and starlight.
