Umami Tuna Melt at Killer Joe
108 N. Fitzugh, Old East DallasNew York transplants Christine Sweet and Christian Nopolitano have concocted Old East Dallas' Killer Joe's food menu to be a walk through the Big Apple. Stroll through Chinatown, Little Italy and Harlem with their made-from-scratch breakfast, panini and cold sandwich menu that pulls culinary inspiration from Italy, Japan, India and more. The Umami Tuna Melt ($14) is a familiar favorite with a flavor-packed upgrade. Tangy miso-infused tuna salad, black olive pesto, kimchi pickles and a generous slice of provolone cheese are pressed in between two slices of toasted bread. - Desiree Gutierrez Wagyu Suadero Tacos from Molino Oloyo
Via Wayward Coffee, 1318 W. Davis St.A 12-step recovery program will be needed to wean yourself off of these weekend-only breakfast tacos. The base is a corn tortilla using heirloom corn sourced from Tlaxcala and Estado de Mexico. The taco is loaded with cook-to-order eggs, flavorful beef, cilantro and onion and two complimentary salsas on the side. For a stronger kick, try the fermented salsas, which are made with salt from chef Olivia Lopez’s home state in Mexico. Find these at Wayward Coffee on the weekends. - Aaren ProdyPotato-Crusted Halibut at Mot Hai Ba
6047 Lewis St. Pillar may be the new shiny toy in chef Peja Krstic's portfolio, but he's not letting Mot Hai Ba fall by the wayside. We dropped in a few weeks ago after a menu refresh and were in awe of the potato-crusted halibut that appeared among several new entrees. "Crusted" may not be the right word; delicate slices of potatoes are beautifully arranged atop the binchotan-grilled halibut and take on a golden hue. The potato-topped filet is plated in a buttery pea puree filled with chanterelle mushrooms. Visually, the dish is a knockout with a taste to match. - Chris WolfgangDirty Martini Deviled Eggs at Apothecary
1922 Greenville Ave. Apothecary is sporting a new food and beverage menu that is a stroll through the decades, including that wonderful time when martinis and deviled eggs ruled along with shag carpet and mustard yellow appliances. In addition to a very dirty martini with rosemary and salt dust on the glass, the deviled eggs are infused with a bit of brine and bleu cheese with crispy onions on top. Get 4 for $14 and call it a night. This lauded speakeasy gets better by the day, and we can't wait to go back. - Lauren Drewes DanielsFatty Brisket from Sullivan’s BBQ
301 S. Mill St., LewisvilleDid someone say affordable barbecue? At Sullivan’s, it is. The highlight of the three meat platter (that comes with two sides and cost $25) was two thick strips of fatty brisket. The crust had a nice caramelized char. The inside retains all of its moisture in the smoker. It doesn’t even need sauce, but a little dabble never hurts and gives it a little oomph. - Aaren Prody
Layers of green tea cake, chantilly and blueberries were one of our favorite bites last month.
