This Ain’t The Macarena

Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers were heavyweights of dance. Their routines are some of the least edited and most demanding in movie history, and for all the strutting they did backward, sideways and on roller skates, you never once saw them sweat. The Southwestern Invitational Dancesport Championships, at Westin Dallas Park Central Hotel, 12720 Merit Drive, promise to be just as demanding but we guarantee you’re going to see the contestants sweat. A lot. We’re talking tight pants, sheer shirts and sequined spandex all drenched and swampy. And for good reason, since this is the last competition in the Texas Circuit, and dancesporters have come from the Texas Challenge in Houston and the Sapphire Ball in Austin to ballroom dance their asses off against each other. Competitions are going on all weekend, including a performance by world-famous Andre and Natalie Paramonov on Saturday, but starting at 7 p.m. is the last set of events, including amateur and professional ballroom dancing.
