  • Ajumma Kimbob Deli

    2240 Royal Lane Northwest Dallas

    972-241-1122

At Ajumma, try Jjolmyeon, or cold spicy noodles, the perfect summer dish. A mess of noodles is served chilled and dunked in spicy red pepper sauce, surrounded by small mounds of julienned vegetables. Stir the veggies into your plate and enjoy. Ajumma’s atmosphere is distinctly old-fashioned; the restaurant’s founder recently opened a new spot, Hot Stone, which offers a very similar menu in a more modern setting.

  • Ari District

    2525 Inwood Rd. Northwest Dallas

    469-778-0075

In 2020 Ari District opened, serving Bangkok-style street food mixed with a bit of the small-town flavors found in the chef and owner's native Thailand. Originally open for lunch and dinner, in 2023 they changed up the model and are now open for breakfast and brunch.

The counter displays the sweet and savory pastries that are available and can change daily. Selections can include spinach rolls, cookie butter cinnamon rolls, matcha cream cronuts and maple bacon cinnamon rolls to name just a few. Perhaps the signature pastry is the “pup” pie stuffed with pork and taro or curry which often sell out before closing. (In fact, we had to make two trips in order to get to try one.)

Be sure to try an egg sando with a nice layer of dry shredded pork. Savory dishes like garlic pepper pork and egg are also fantastic.

The banana rice pudding, which was a fitting finale to this brunch affair is not too sweet, with just-ripe bananas and dark-grained rice which made for an attractive display, all topped off with a scoop of a delectable homemade coconut ice cream, some of the best we’ve ever had. Yes and thank you.
  • Baby Dolls Saloon

    10250 Shady Trail Northwest Dallas

    214-358-5511

Years ago, Baby Dolls Saloon moved locations and began boasting "The Legend Lives On." The 37-year-old institution backs up the claim with a roster of more than 200 dancers on any given night. The grand staircase opens onto a bar that sits in the center of the club. The main stage is enormous, and off to the side are smaller audience rooms where the waitresses hang out. Although it has its share of regulars, Baby Dolls is one of the more famous strip clubs in Dallas, and you can count on any number of out-of-towners of all stripes to be there enjoying the show.

  • Bachman Tacos and Grill

3311 W. Northwest Highway Northwest Dallas

    214-352-0010

The world would be all the better if it were filled with more trompo taco fans. To make a great trompo taco, the vertical spit has to spin, but at many places business isn't steady enough to keep the contraption in motion. Not so at Bachman Tacos and Grill, where tacos are a necessary add on to every tankful of gasoline. The taqueria is nestled inside a Chevron so you can pound a taco before gas up your car -- to get to your next taqueria, of course. Meat cooked on a vertical spit often lends itself to some of the most beautiful meals in the world of street food. Just hear the word shawarma and visions of charred but supple lamb paint the back of your cortex, while the phantom scent of rosemary tickles your nose. In the back, cooks thread huge sheets of fatty meat, dripping in marinade, onto the long vertical spits. The finished cones look disturbing and even a bit obscene, but after roasting a while you'll start to come around. It's almost hypnotizing as it spins like some giant carnal music box ornament.

  • Buca Di Beppo

    7843 Park Lane Northwest Dallas

    214-361-8462

This schlocky restaurant was drafted to look like a basement neighborhood Southern Italian supper club where portions are heaped "family style" and flavors run from vapid to vivid. If your expectations are modest, your belly will end up captivated.

  • Bugatti Ristorante

3802 W. Northwest Highway Northwest Dallas

    214-350-2470

The one thing likely to blow you away at Bugatti Ristorante is the jetwash from the planes landing at adjacent Love Field. The food is conservative, almost comforting: Atlantic salmon with a mild dill sauce, perhaps, or penne pasta with grilled chicken. The décor is elegant but bland, the service unobtrusive. But these solid elements, offered at surprisingly reasonable prices, add up to a reliable Italian favorite--and the terrace is a great lunch spot for plane-spotters.
  • Cabaret Royale

    10723 Composite Dr. Northwest Dallas

    214-350-0303

With somewhat classier surroundings than your average strip club, Cabaret Royale caters to a more discerning clientele -- sort of. While high rollers can buy a wristband and ascend the fancy staircase up to the VIP area (home to the infamous “Champagne Room”), mere mortals can stay downstairs, where the beer is just as cold, the cushy high-backed chairs are just as comfortable and the cocktail waitresses prance around in thong bodysuits. The best thing about Cabaret Royale, though, is the diversity of the ladies: tall, short, thin, curvy, redhead, blonde, white, brown, black, tattoos, piercings -- they have it all. And if all that dollar-bill tossing and canoodling has got you working up an appetite, there’s a chef on hand to prepare everything from pasta to steak, not to mention the breakfast buffet that kicks off at 2 a.m. Legs and eggs, indeed.

  • Cabritos Los Cavazos

10240 N. Walton Walker Blvd. Northwest Dallas

    972-707-7020

Cabritos is the star at the only full-on Monterrey-style, goat-grilling show in the Dallas area. Stare through the glass kitchen wall at the massive pit, above which goat legs, shoulders and ribcages stand like planted flags, then feast on one of the cuts alongside charro beans and the restaurant’s excellent salsas. Few make-your-own-taco experiences in Dallas get as good as this. One portion of cabrito, with all the fixings that come with it, is enough to make one person full or to satisfy two people who’ve also shared an appetizer.

Top pick: Splurge on the whole goat for $235. If that’s a little too much food for your household, consider the spectacularly rich machitos — rolls of goat meat, fat and organs stuffed into the animal’s digestive tract and grilled until crispy.

Fun fact: If you’re wondering why the dining room is a little strange, and why the kitchen has a glass wall partition, it’s because this space used to be a liquor store.

  • Casa Navarro

    11742 Marsh Lane Northwest Dallas

    214-357-0141

A homey neighborhood joint with a huge Tex-Mex and Taxco-Mex menu that's found quite a following with good reason. Along with the usual chips and salsa, starters also come with a steaming cup of delicious, beer-spiked bean soup. The Mex-Mex items are the most interesting: A huge portion of lean pork guisado was rendered extra-spicy with lots of red pepper flakes, and the snapper veracruzano was rich with mushrooms, cilantro and diced garlic, though the fish was slightly overcooked. Wash away the fire with a fruity imported Mexican soda. Casa Navarro's sopapillas have to be the biggest, most billowy specimens in Dallas. Don't miss them.

  • Chef Hsu Chinese Super Buffet

11180 Harry Hines Blvd. Northwest Dallas

    972-484-0808

It is perhaps redundant to point out that Chef Hsu has an all-you-can-eat "super buffet" at lunch packed with fresh, fried, braised, sautéed and steamed foods, plus fortune cookies. And chopsticks. What isn't redundant to point out is that most of this Chinese food is delicious: fresh, greaseless and tasty without that nasty steam-table shrivel that can sometimes make egg foo yong look like melted auto parts. But the real gems stud the à la carte menu with its braised sea cucumbers, fried and braised whole fish and braised shark's fin. Even the bravest buffet tables wouldn't go near these slivers of delicious Chinese exotica.

  • Chilangos Tacos

10777 Harry Hines Blvd. #130 Northwest Dallas

    214-200-3869

Deep in the maze of warehouses, industrial plants and nightclubs along Harry Hines Boulevard, Chilangos serves a short menu of tacos along with spicy elote cups and horchata. The interior is a chic tribute to Mexico City, with the ordering counter made to resemble a street or market stall, Topo Chico bottles converted into flower holders on each table and words of culinary wisdom painted on the walls. There aren’t a lot of taco choices here, but every single one can be made costra-style — that is, with the fillings of your choice wrapped in a golden-brown blanket of crisp molten cheese. That cheese pocket is then placed on a flour tortilla that can barely stretch to hold it.

Top pick: The traditional and best order to fold into a cheesy sheath is Chilangos’ excellent pastor-marinated pork. Just be sure to add lots of chopped onions and salsa verde to offset the cheese’s richness.

  • Club Onyx

10557 Wire Way (at Northwest Highway) Northwest Dallas

    214-545-5600

Club Onyx is one of the largest topless clubs in Dallas. The entrance is a narrow, blue-lit tunnel that would seem more futuristic if it weren't for the standard-issue metal detector. (The dancers won't be the ones patting you down if you set it off, so leave the heavy stuff at home.) Onyx is topless only, which means it has a full bar, and you're just as likely to see women partying there as fellas. The music is mostly hip-hop and club tracks, the nine stages inside are usually full, and be on the lookout for frequent drink specials.
  • Clubhouse

    2250 Manana Dr. Northwest Dallas

    972-869-9506

The Clubhouse, a strip club with plenty of strip-club neighbors, has chosen golf for its theme. Because the place is dark and has a predilection for motorcycles and heavy metal, it's hard to see how that theme is executed. Along with the main stage, the bar in the middle is fronted with a stage that accommodates nine dancers during the club's peak hours. The second floor holds another bar for VIP service. The dancers are all nude, so the bar is BYOB, and every Sunday the Clubhouse hosts an after-hours party from 4 a.m. until 8 a.m.

  • The Cockpit

    9454 Marsh Lane Northwest Dallas

    214-352-7252

The Cockpit glows neon yellow from a lonely strip mall off Marsh Lane, drawing a middle-aged crowd with wood paneling and a bartender's promise to know everyone's name. The beer is cold, the liquor "bring your own" and the wine list offers a choice of red, white and pink. Preserving the bar's roots--pilots originally owned the bar when it opened in 1986--airplane models hang from the ceiling, reflecting from glass-framed pictures of planes covering the walls. On Sunday, the bartenders cook whatever they feel like and it's free to boot.

  • Crown Hill Memorial Park

9700 Webb Chapel Rd. Northwest Dallas

    214-350-9951

The mausoleum at Crown Hill is designated as a Dallas historical landmark. It was built in 1940 in the art deco style of the '20's and '30's and has been renowned for its artistic value, including its ageless materials, handcrafted details, and antique stain glass windows. The site of the cemetery was once a family dairy farm owned by C. W. Smith, who constructed the mausoleum as a memorial to his then recently deceased parents and daughter-in-law. Crown Hill's most celebrated resident is bank robber, Bonnie Parker of Bonnie & Clyde.
