Unicorn Fans Wait In Line for Hours at Deep Ellum's New Magical Dessert Bar

Brace yourself, fans of the Starbucks Unicorn Frappuccino: You're about to flip your shit. You can now get your glitter fix at the new Magical Dessert Bar, where every painfully cute confection is an ode to the mythical beast. Everyone from moms and daughters in matching unicorn onesies to grown-ass, chain-smoking men endured waits upwards of two hours to get a taste of unicorn magic on grand opening weekend.

Beyond the velvet rope, a flourish of pink lilies decorate the shop's doorway. Walls are splashed with Pepto pink, adorned with golden butterflies. A chandelier sparkles above the pastry case.

The cashier, who is literally a unicorn (or perhaps an SMU student wearing a fuzzy unicorn hoodie), will take your order in the standing-room-only space. It'll be hard to decide. The temptation is to go big, especially after a two-hour wait that didn't exactly feel magical. In this case, the only suitable option is the most expensive thing on the menu: the $14.99 Monster Unicorn Vanilla Shake. Embellished with frosting, sprinkles, cookies and an entire slice of cake (or supercute doughnut for those moments when they run out of cake), this baby is 100 percent Instagramable. Yeah, you're definitely taking more than a few pictures of this. In fact, strangers will ask to take a picture of your milkshake. That's just part of how unicorn enchantment works, so don't question it.

The monster shakes are flashy, but the hand-squeezed lemonades (equipped with LED lights) actually flash. Ringed with cotton candy and infused with flavors like mango uzu and lavender, they're a good option for those of us who can only afford $6.50 worth of magic. Cake pops, cupcakes and cake slices are all on offer here, too. Resist the temptation to pair it with a signature pink hot chocolate — it's exciting, but it's not the best thing on the menu.

Deep Ellum may grunt at the pricey desserts and blatant attempt at kitsch, but your 4-year-old (or the 4-year-old in you) is going to love this place. Put on your "Unicorns are Real" T-shirt and some comfortable shoes (the lines probably aren't dying down anytime soon) and head down there. It'll be an endeavor, but you'll walk out with a proud smile, flaunting your cutesy beverage or coveted pink box like a trophy, spreading unicorn magic wherever you go.
