Miznon, an Israeli restaurant that serves Mediterranean street food, opened its second store in Texas on Saturday, Nov. 16. It's in The Colony at The Shacks Dining & Dog Park, a combo dog park and food hall.

The Shacks, in the Austin Ranch neighborhood of The Colony, is a family-friendly place with multiple restaurant options, a large, open-air patio and a one-acre dog park. The place gives out a chill afternoon energy, perfectly matching Miznon’s casual dining vibe.

Israeli chef Eyal Shani, who starred in the TV series “Food for Thought” and served as a judge for “MasterChef Israel,” established the first Miznon in 2011 in Tel Aviv. Since then, the brand has expanded to Paris, Vienna, Melbourne, Singapore and elsewhere. In 2018, the first U.S. Miznon opened in the Chelsea Market in New York.

Miznon made its Texas debut at 2639 Main St. in Deep Ellum in March. Both the Dallas and The Colony locations are locally owned and operated by co-owner Jude Akpunku, a Cedar Hill native.

The menu features pitas made from fresh, seasonally inspired ingredients. The Dallas restaurant offers a dozen varieties of pitas, including lamb and a folded cheeseburger. The menu also serves plenty of meat-free items like cauliflower, mushroom and egg pitas.

The pitas and libations here are great, but don't even think about going to Miznon without getting the cauliflower.

Non-pita options are available in Miznon. Some highlights include the lamb kebab plate, served with roasted tomatoes and onions, and the Intimate Stew, which is slow-cooked beef and roots seasoned with tahini and spicy green peppers.

However, Miznon might be best known for its whole roasted cauliflower heads, drenched in olive oil and sprinkled with salt. Everyone tries to replicate this recipe, but it's best to leave this to the experts — Miznon has special ovens (and juju).

The drink menu covers European and Middle Eastern beer, such as Peroni, Goldstar and Original Sin Hard Cider. It also offers fruit-flavored, refreshing cocktails. Among them are Aperol Spritz, a mixture of Aperol, prosecco, soda and orange; Arak Mojito, an Elite Arak-based drink with mint, lemon juice and syrup; and Cucumber Gin, made with Grey Whale Gin, tonic water, lemon, cucumber and a little Angostura bitters.

We love Miznon in Deep Ellum and are excited to see this extension into The Colony.
