Speaking of awesome free parties, we here at DC9 have one of our own for you to indulge in this week, too. On Thursday night, our monthly Locals Only! series returns to the Jack Daniel's Saloon at Gilley's on South Lamar Street. And our guests this week are two of the region's best young bands -- bands you'll be happy you got to know on the ground floor, we think.
Soviet you should already know -- we've hyped the young John Spies-led group of punks, recently expanded from a trio to a quartet, plenty since the January release of their debut EP, Forever Today. Live, they live up to the hype, too -- as evidenced, we think, by "the night Soviet made the 35 Conferette their woman," back in March at J&J's Pizza in Denton.
More than likely, though, you don't yet know Sealion. That's mostly because this Deep Ellum four-piece is still brand new, building its name slowly but surely before the fall debut release of their debut. And, judging from early returns, we're banking more on surely than slowly: Blending smart jangly indie-rock chops with a dance-punk mentality, their shows are fast earning quite the good-time reputation.
This night, surely, will be another one of those good times. As with last month, the completely free-to-attend affair will feature $2 wells and domestics at the bar and -- score another one for the good guys -- free mechanical bull rides.
After the jump, to further entice you, enjoy a free mp3 from each of the bands. Then let us know if you'll be able to make it by RSVPing to the event on its Facebook page. Yeah? Yeah.
