The fast-casual hotdog chain Portillo's is known for its rich, moist cakes, in addition to Chicago-land fare like dogs dragged through the garden and Italian beef sandwiches. One can even order a slice of cake whipped into a shake, which is a whole new level of gluttony.
This week, news is out that the restaurant, which now has multiple locations across North Texas, has partnered with Milk Bar from James Beard award-winning pastry chef Christina Tosi. Her dessert shop in New York City is popular for giving Botox and a blowout to childhood comfort foods. Years ago, when Tosi's famous crack pie was sold and delivered in Dallas, we tried it and won't forget that first bite and the accompanying OMG-I-get-it moment.
So, yes, this is just a cookie from a fast-casual hotdog spot, but we'll probably get in the drive-thru line to get one. Or six.
The Portillo's Chocolate Cake Cookie is a limited-time engagement. Individually wrapped for supreme freshness, it combines the Portillo's cake with swirls, pops and chunks of the fudge frosting, all baked into a Milk Bar chocolate cookie. If you're a fan of the cake or Milk Bar — or just find happiness in chocolate — this will surely hit.
Tosi calls the cake "understated yet an absolute home run" and says creating this cookie was a "love letter to this icon [Portillo's] through the lens of a Milk Bar cookie." We're here for all that.
The press release doesn't mention how long the promotion will last, only that they're available at all restaurants with a dining room through the grab-and-go display. Or you can order a six-pack for $32 through MilkBarStore.com while supplies last.
