Veggie Guy: Vegan-Friendly Tex Mex Chains

A lot of people ask me where they can get some good vegan Tex-Mex around town. I usually guide them to Monica's, where vegans can get the best enchiladas in Dallas, but I understand that driving down to Deep Ellum isn't always practical...especially if you're on the wrong other side...

A lot of people ask me where they can get some good vegan Tex-Mex around town. I usually guide them to Monica's, where vegans can get the best enchiladas in Dallas, but I understand that driving down to Deep Ellum isn't always practical...especially if you're on the wrong other side of the loop.

These are my picks for vegan-friendly Tex-Mex joints with multiple locations:

Mattito's: The Lite Vegetable Fajitas are steamed vegetables (broccoli, cauliflower, squash, onions, and bells) served with vegetarian black beans. This dish is huge and can easily feed two people. Don't be fooled by the vegetable-based enchilada dishes' names--spinach enchiladas and avocado enchiladas are not vegetarian (sauces are all made with chicken stock), but the guys here are willing to accommodate veg-heads by tweaking the menu. Check out Mattito's Sunday brunch for bottomless mimosas--now at both locations.

Dallas Uptown: 3011 Routh St. 214-526-8181

Frisco: 6129 Main St. 214-872-3411

Mi Cocina: With locations all over the DFW map, Mi Cocina makes it easy for vegans to dine out with their omnivorous friends and enjoy a night on the town. Latin stir-fry is a mix of mushrooms, onion, carrot, zucchini, and potatoes. The stir-fry is served with pico de gallo, guacamole, beans, and rice. Beans and rice are not vegan, but you can sub extra pico in their place. Off the menu, vegetarian nachos can be ordered without cheese, and you can chase 'em down with a Mambo Taxi...or maybe three (that's the cut-off).
Dallas West Village: 3699 McKinney Ave. 469-533-5663

Flower Mound Parker Square: 900 Parker Square 972-899-6426

Fort Worth Sundance Square: 501 Main St. 817-877-3600

Plano Legacy: 5670 Legacy Dr. 972-473-8745

Southlake Town Square: 1276 Main St. 817-410-6426

Cyclone Anaya's: Ok--there's no real vegan entrée at Cyclone Anaya's, but vegans can create a decent meal by combining several sides. The menu offers vegetarian refried black beans, avocado wedges, roasted jalapeños (careful with those!), and corn tortillas. House margaritas are moderately strong, too.
Dallas: 3211 Oak Lawn 214-420-0030

Dallas: 5225 Beltline Rd. 214-389-6280

So on those days when you're craving good vegan Tex-Mex, one of these places will take good care of you.
