Seven Ways to Get Caffeinated When It's Hot as Hell Outside

Some days, a cup of hot coffee sounds more like torture than salvation. And by "some days," we mean from now through approximately November, when the Texas heat is unrelenting in its quest to make us all feel like a heavy sack of hot garbage. Regardless, whether it's 100 degrees or 10, we need caffeine — daily. When it's just too hot to stomach a steaming red eye, try one of these refreshing caffeinated beverages. Because if you sweat through your clothes before you even get to work, it's going to be a very long day indeed.

Thai Tea

Thai Tea, an iced drink made with sweetened condensed milk and strongly brewed Ceylon tea, is equal parts refreshing, sweet and caffeinated, and two local Dallas spots make one of the best takes on this summer-worthy drink: Asian Mint and The Mint.  This Thai Tea comes packed with citrus for an added dose of refreshing. 

Iced Cortado

Ascension took a beloved espresso drink — the cortado, espresso cut with a small amount of warm milk — and gave it the summer treatment with their iced cortado. A classic cortado is shaken over ice with a dash of simple syrup to create a lightly sweet drink that ensures you won't have to wait until Thanksgiving to indulge your cortado addiction.

Sometimes, the thought of a hot shot of espresso just feels like too much to bear — which is why some beautiful, caffeinated genius started mixing shots of espresso with that glorious Mexican sparkling mineral water, Topo Chico. At Bolsa Mercado, their iced espresso/Topo concoction is also mixed with a "secret syrup" that lends this fizzy drink a touch of sweetness.

If you're still itching for a shot of espresso, try Drugstore Cowboy's layered shot, the Teardrop. It starts with vanilla syrup, a layer of cold heavy cream and a shot of espresso on top, and it's meant to be taken like a shot of whiskey. The bitter, warm espresso mixes with the cold, rich cream to create a velvety hot-cold battle in the mouth, and the sugary vanilla finish caps it all off with a touch of sweetness. If you're not big on sugar, ask Drugstore Cowboy to go light on the vanilla syrup.
